SUMMARY:"Fix It\," Tue. March 8\, 2016\, 6 PM\, CHER Bldg\, Morehead\, KY
DESCRIPTION:Fix It\nA 38 minute Video \nThe CHER Building\, Morehead\, KY \nMarch 8\, 2016\, 6PM \nOpen to the public \nAbout \nHow to fix our health care financing system.  Currently our system is complex\, confusing\, and most importantly obscenely expensive.  The video outlines the problems in graphic detail and proposes a solution\, all presented from the viewpoint of businesses.  It is about the money.  The US spends twice as much per capita as most other civilized countries.  The cause of this fact is our reliance on private health insurance companies and their high overhead costs. \nBy having a single payer system\, like Medicare for All\, enormous savings would accrue.  Billions and Billions are going wasted on bureauracy.  The viewer will learn the details of the problems and how they can be fixed.  How can this be financed\, and who will pay more and who will pay less.  What tests and treatments will be covered.  Will my taxes go up?  Will my net income go up or down.  Is this socialized medicine?  Will I be able to keep my own doctor.  Will all citizens be covered.  Will I be covered even if I lose my job\, or don’t have one? \nThe government of Taiwan switched the entire country from a US style with private insurance companies to a Medicare for All Plan recently with massive savings.  It is feasible.  Our county implemented Medicare in the late 60’s in one year before computerization.  It can be done. \nTwo Million Bankruptcies per year in USA.  One Million because of health related expenses.  A Switzerland heath official reacted with horror.  Says it never happens in that country. \nThe Affordable Care Act took two baby steps forward and one baby step backwards. Many more folks are underinsured now than before its passage.  Private health insurance employees are good at their jobs\, designing plans that look affordable\, but really are not.  Medicine is too complicated\, and we are all different.  Thus the “Market” will never “Fix It” \nAll of us are interested in solving this problem. Those of us who are young\, or old\, or liberal\, or conservative\, or religious\, or not.  We all will need the best health care our dedicated and talented physicians\, nurses and other providers can provide.  We should not need to be wealthy to obtain the best health care in the world. \nJoin us for the video and a follow up question and answer session. Got questions\, we got answers or know who does. \nThis program is sponsored and made possible by Sustainable Morehead\,  Morehead Rowan County Chamber of Commerce\, St. Claire Regional Medical Center\, Shepherds Printing\, and Kentuckians for Single Payer Health Care. \nEwell Scott\, MD\, Morehead\, KY \nShare and Enjoy !Shares

SUMMARY:"Fix It-Healthcare at the Tipping Point\," Movie\, Mon. Feb. 22\, 2016\, 6:30 pm\, LFPL\, Centennial Rm
DESCRIPTION:“Fix It–Healthcare at the Tipping Point”\n\n\n\nKentuckians for Single Payer Health Care invites you to join us to view the 38 minute documentary film\, “Fix It.”\nMonday\, February 22\, 2016\, 6:30 pm\nCentennial Room\, Louisville Free Public Library\n301 York St.\, Downtown Louisville\nThe film will be followed by responses from a panel and then by general discussion open to all.\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nKarina Barillas\, M.Ed.\, Director\, La Casita Center which educates\, advocates\, and promotes health and healing for Hispanic/Latino immigrants.\nBarbara R Casper\, MD\, FACP\, U of L professor of medicine\, chief of General Internal Medicine\, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education\nBrandi Jones\, President\, U of L Students for a National Health Program\, 2nd year medical student\nJim Wayne\, Representative of the 35th District\, Kentucky General Assembly\, past president of the National Association of Social Workers\n\n\n\n\nThe film by Vincent Mondillo and Richard Master examines the economics of the US healthcare system from the perspective of  business owners and makes a compelling case for scrapping our complex and  expensive multi-payer system for a single-payer\, improved Medicare for  All.  Legislation that would enact such a solution\, HR 676\, has been introduced into Congress by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan.  There are currently 60 cosponsors of HR 676 including Kentucky Congressman John  Yarmuth.\nThe filmmakers state:  “This documentary takes an  in-depth look into how our dysfunctional health care system is damaging our economy\, suffocating our businesses\, discouraging physicians and negatively impacting on the nation’s health\, while remaining un-affordable for a third of  our citizens.”\nThe nonpartisan film includes interviews with some of the nation’s  leading health policy experts like Dr. Don Berwick\, former administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, and Dr. Theodore Marmor\, Professor Emeritus of Public Policy at Yale University.\nRichard Master\, CEO\, of MCS  Industries\, Inc. in eastern Pennsylvania\, notes that his company now has to pay  $1.5 million a year to provide health care for his company’s workers and  dependents but that 33 cents of every premium dollar has nothing to do with health care.  He states:  “We spend more on health care than any other country\, and we have far less to show for it.  More than 17% of our  national GDP is now eaten up by health care costs\, far more than any other country.”\nThe filmmakers interview Dann Konkin\, president of a Canadian industrial screen printing company who decided against opening a facility in the U. S. after finding out how much he would have to pay to provide health insurance.\nMaster concludes\, “It is time we realize we don’t have to tolerate a system–a $3 trillion system–in which one of three dollars is wasted.  A  system in which just a few sick employees can take down a company.  A  system that starves the rest of our economy to the point that we don’t have enough money for our schools and roads.  Please join me and many others in the fight for a simplified\, single-payer health care system.”\nKentuckians for Single Payer Health Care is offering to schedule free showings of the film to audiences around the state.\nThe website for “Fix It” is www.fixithealthcare.com.\nKay Tillow\, Chair\nKentuckians for Single  Payer Health Care\n(502) 636  1551\nLouisville\, KY\nnursenpo@aol.com\nShare and Enjoy !Shares

We will also underscore the need for a more fundamental health reform – a nonprofit\, publicly financed\, single-payer health system. Our SNaHP chapter at University of Louisville will participate in this momentous nationwide day of action on October 1. \n  \nDetails of the event can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/events/763246980470650/ \n  \nWhen \nThursday\, Oct. 1\, 2015 \nTeach-In Session – 12:00 to 4:00 pm \n  \nRally and Candlelight Vigil 6:00 – 8:00 \n  \nWho \nStudents from various schools and social justice groups. Preston St. to Jefferson Square Park (6th and Jefferson) via Liberty St. \n  \nThe press is welcome to attend our rally and candlelight vigil at 6pm EST at Jefferson Square Park. \nWhy \nThe United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not guarantee universal health care. Unfortunately\, the Affordable Care Act is neither universal nor affordable. It will leave 30 million Americans uninsured and tens of millions underinsured\, unable to afford needed care. Tens of thousands of people will continue to die every year just because they lack health insurance. Medical problems are the leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.\, and research shows nearly 80 percent of those declaring bankruptcy due to medical debt had insurance at the onset of their illness. Our patients need and deserve better. \n  \nThis year marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare. As medical students\, part of our mission is to ensure that everyone who needs care gets it. One way to achieve this goal is by improving the Medicare program and expanding it to cover all Americans. \n  \nWe urge our fellow students and the public to join us for this #TenOne: Medicare-for-All National Day of Action on Thursday\, Oct. 1\, to bring national attention to our failing health care system and the need for single-payer health reform. \n  \nFor more of the thinking behind the #TenOne initiative\, including patient stories\, please read these posts on SNaHP’s official blog by medical students Vanessa Van Doren and Bryant Shuey. \n— \n  \nThis project was initiated by Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP)\, the student arm of Physicians for a National Health Program (www.pnhp.org)\, an organization of more than 19\,000 physicians\, health professionals\, medical and health professional students who advocate for universal\, single-payer\, improved Medicare for all. \n  \nShare and Enjoy !Shares
