DESCRIPTION:Media Release \nEnd Medigap discrimination for pre-existing conditions;  Support HB 445 \nContact:  Kay Tillow (502) 636-1551\, nursenpo@aol.com\, Dr. Garrett Adams\, (502) 895-8847 \nMedia Conference to Support HB 445 to end Medigap discrimination for pre-existing conditions will take place on: \nWednesday\, March 4\, 2020 \nat 9:00 am in Room 149 of the Capitol Annex in Frankfort.\n  \nState Representative Tom Burch has introduced HB 445 which would end the ability of Medigap plans to charge higher rates or deny coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions.  The legislation is needed because seniors in Kentucky who purchase Medicare Advantage but later seek to return to traditional Medicare and purchase a Medigap plan are no longer protected from underwriting. \nSuch persons with pre-existing conditions can be charged sky high prices\, or denied entirely\, a supplementary Medigap plan.  The problem is discussed in this article in Medpage Today: \nhttps://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/83661 \nThere are only four states where there is some protection against discrimination for pre-existing conditions under these circumstances.  This article from Kaiser Family Foundation explains: \nhttps://www.kff.org/medicare/press-release/in-all-but-four-states-seniors-on-medicare-can-be-denied-a-medigap-policy-due-to-pre-existing-conditions-except-during-specified-windows-of-opportunity/ \nRepublicans\, Democrats and independents are all opposed to charging outrageous rates or refusing to sell policies to people because they are\, or have been\, sick.  The practice is clearly inhumane. \nSpeaking on behalf of Kentuckians for Single Payer Health Care\, Dr. Garrett Adams stated that Rep. D. from Harvard University.  He is currently teaching at University of Massachusetts\, Amherst.  He has studied and written extensively on the funding of improved Medicare for All\, single-payer systems. \n________________ \n\nFriedman analysis of HR 676: Medicare for All would save billions\n‘Medicare for All’ would cover everyone\, save billions in first year: new study\n\n\nPhysicians for a National Health Program\nJuly 31\, 2013 \nUpgrading the nation’s Medicare program and expanding it to cover people of all ages would yield over a half-trillion dollars in efficiency savings in its first year of operation\, enough to pay for high-quality\, comprehensive health benefits for all residents of the United States at a lower cost to most individuals\, families and businesses. \nThat’s the chief finding of a new fiscal study by Gerald Friedman\, a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. There would even be money left over to help pay down the national debt\, he said. \nFriedman says his analysis shows that a nonprofit single-payer system based on the principles of the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act\, H.R. 676\, introduced by Rep. John Conyers Jr.\, D-Mich.\, and co-sponsored by 44 other lawmakers\, would save an estimated $592 billion in 2014. Jackson St\, \nProfessor Gerald Friedman earned his BA in economics and history from Columbia University and his Ph. D. from Harvard University.  He is currently teaching at University of Massachusetts\, Amherst.  He has studied and written extensively on the funding of improved Medicare for All\, single-payer systems. \n________________ \n\nPhysicians for a National Health Program\nJuly 31\, 2013 \nUpgrading the nation’s Medicare program and expanding it to cover people of all ages would yield over a half-trillion dollars in efficiency savings in its first year of operation\, enough to pay for high-quality\, comprehensive health benefits for all residents of the United States at a lower cost to most individuals\, families and businesses. \nThat’s the chief finding of a new fiscal study by Gerald Friedman\, a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. There would even be money left over to help pay down the national debt\, he said. \nFriedman says his analysis shows that a nonprofit single-payer system based on the principles of the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act\, H.R. 676\, introduced by Rep. John Conyers Jr.\, D-Mich.\, and co-sponsored by 44 other lawmakers\, would save an estimated $592 billion in 2014. Preston\, Louisville\nGerald Friedman\, PhD\, Professor of Economics at U Mass\, Amherst\nProfessor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts\, Gerald Friedman was born in New York City in 1955.   After graduation from Columbia College in 1977 he worked on the research staff of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union before moving to Cambridge\, Massachusetts to attend graduate school at Harvard\, where he earned a Ph.D. in Economics in 1986.  Since 1984\, he has taught Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.   He is currently working on a book\, The Case for Medicare for All (Polity Press\, forthcoming). \nDr. Friedman has studied the funding of a national single payer health care system and concluded that an improved Medicare for All would save billions in addition to bringing health care to everyone. \nShare and Enjoy !Shares

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 8\, 2019\, at 1:30 PM CST at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Headquarters\, 300 E. Randolph St. in Chicago\, students\, physicians\, nurses\, unions\, and single payer activists from around the country will unite to protest the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (A.M.A.). \nThe action was initiated by Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP)\, the medical student affiliate of Physicians for a National Health Program.  The All Unions Committee for Single Payer Health Care is among a broad range of co-sponsors of the event. \nThe AMA has joined with the leading insurance\, pharmaceutical\, and hospital companies to form the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future to campaign against national single payer health care. \nThe June 8 Action will call on the AMA to withdraw from this corporate front group. \nFrom the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Headquarters the demonstrators will march to the Hyatt Regency Chicago at 151 E.
