SUMMARY:"Fix It-Healthcare at the Tipping Point\," Movie\, Mon. Feb. 22\, 2016\, 6:30 pm\, LFPL\, Centennial Rm
DESCRIPTION:“Fix It–Healthcare at the Tipping Point”\n\n\n\nKentuckians for Single Payer Health Care invites you to join us to view the 38 minute documentary film\, “Fix It.”\nMonday\, February 22\, 2016\, 6:30 pm\nCentennial Room\, Louisville Free Public Library\n301 York St.\, Downtown Louisville\nThe film will be followed by responses from a panel and then by general discussion open to all.\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nKarina Barillas\, M.Ed.\, Director\, La Casita Center which educates\, advocates\, and promotes health and healing for Hispanic/Latino immigrants.\nBarbara R Casper\, MD\, FACP\, U of L professor of medicine\, chief of General Internal Medicine\, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education\nBrandi Jones\, President\, U of L Students for a National Health Program\, 2nd year medical student\nJim Wayne\, Representative of the 35th District\, Kentucky General Assembly\, past president of the National Association of Social Workers\n\n\n\n\nThe film by Vincent Mondillo and Richard Master examines the economics of the US healthcare system from the perspective of  business owners and makes a compelling case for scrapping our complex and  expensive multi-payer system for a single-payer\, improved Medicare for  All.  Legislation that would enact such a solution\, HR 676\, has been introduced into Congress by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan.  There are currently 60 cosponsors of HR 676 including Kentucky Congressman John  Yarmuth.\nThe filmmakers state:  “This documentary takes an  in-depth look into how our dysfunctional health care system is damaging our economy\, suffocating our businesses\, discouraging physicians and negatively impacting on the nation’s health\, while remaining un-affordable for a third of  our citizens.”\nThe nonpartisan film includes interviews with some of the nation’s  leading health policy experts like Dr. Don Berwick\, former administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, and Dr. Theodore Marmor\, Professor Emeritus of Public Policy at Yale University.\nRichard Master\, CEO\, of MCS  Industries\, Inc. in eastern Pennsylvania\, notes that his company now has to pay  $1.5 million a year to provide health care for his company’s workers and  dependents but that 33 cents of every premium dollar has nothing to do with health care.  He states:  “We spend more on health care than any other country\, and we have far less to show for it.  More than 17% of our  national GDP is now eaten up by health care costs\, far more than any other country.”\nThe filmmakers interview Dann Konkin\, president of a Canadian industrial screen printing company who decided against opening a facility in the U. S. after finding out how much he would have to pay to provide health insurance.\nMaster concludes\, “It is time we realize we don’t have to tolerate a system–a $3 trillion system–in which one of three dollars is wasted.  A  system in which just a few sick employees can take down a company.  A  system that starves the rest of our economy to the point that we don’t have enough money for our schools and roads.  Please join me and many others in the fight for a simplified\, single-payer health care system.”\nKentuckians for Single Payer Health Care is offering to schedule free showings of the film to audiences around the state.\nThe website for “Fix It” is www.fixithealthcare.com.\nKay Tillow\, Chair\nKentuckians for Single  Payer Health Care\n(502) 636  1551\nLouisville\, KY\nnursenpo@aol.com\nShare and Enjoy !Shares

Unfortunately\, the Affordable Care Act is neither universal nor affordable. It will leave 30 million Americans uninsured and tens of millions underinsured\, unable to afford needed care. Tens of thousands of people will continue to die every year just because they lack health insurance. Medical problems are the leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.\, and research shows nearly 80 percent of those declaring bankruptcy due to medical debt had insurance at the onset of their illness. Our patients need and deserve better. \n  \nThis year marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare. As medical students\, part of our mission is to ensure that everyone who needs care gets it. One way to achieve this goal is by improving the Medicare program and expanding it to cover all Americans. \n  \nWe urge our fellow students and the public to join us for this #TenOne: Medicare-for-All National Day of Action on Thursday\, Oct. 1\, to bring national attention to our failing health care system and the need for single-payer health reform. \n  \nFor more of the thinking behind the #TenOne initiative\, including patient stories\, please read these posts on SNaHP’s official blog by medical students Vanessa Van Doren and Bryant Shuey. \n— \n  \nThis project was initiated by Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP)\, the student arm of Physicians for a National Health Program (www.pnhp.org)\, an organization of more than 19\,000 physicians\, health professionals\, medical and health professional students who advocate for universal\, single-payer\, improved Medicare for all. \n  \nShare and Enjoy !Shares

Preston St. to Jefferson Square Park (6th and Jefferson) via Liberty St. \n  \nThe press is welcome to attend our rally and candlelight vigil at 6pm EST at Jefferson Square Park. \nWhy \nThe United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not guarantee universal health care. SUMMARY:Celebration: Medicare's 50th Anniversary\, Thur.\, July 30\, 6:30 pm\, Downtown Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the 50th Birthday of Medicare. \nCentennial Room\, Louisville Free Public Library\, 301 York St.\, Louisville\, KY \n Here are a few good things the public may not know about Medicare. \nIn addition to bringing health care coverage to seniors and later to the disabled and those in kidney failure\, Medicare desegregated our hospitals\, reduced infant mortality\, and funded physician residency programs. \n  \n  \n\n Medicare As A Catalyst For Reducing Health Disparities \n\nJune Eichner and Bruce C. Vladeck \n  \nhttp://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/full/24/2/365 \n  \nAs the nation’s largest purchaser and regulator of health care\, Medicare is positioned to be a leader in reducing racial and ethnic health disparities. Its leverage was demonstrated in 1966—the year of Medicare’s inception—when hospitals desegregated as a condition for receiving Medicare reimbursement. Since then\, Medicare has contributed to dramatic improvement in the health of the elderly and disabled minority population\, although disparities between minority and white beneficiaries remain…. \n  \n  \n\n The Civil Rights Act of 1964\, Hospital Desegregation and Black Infant Mortality in Mississippi\nDouglas V. Almond\, Kenneth Y. Chay\, and Michael Greenstone \nMarch 2008\n\nhttp://qed.econ.queensu.ca/paper/chay.pdf \nThe gains in black access to hospitals coincide with a striking reduction in black post-neonatal death for causes considered preventable with timely hospital care. The location and timing of the racial convergence across Mississippi’s counties correspond with when their hospitals received certification for reimbursement from the Medicare program\, which required compliance with Title VI. We calculate that this came at a small increase in costs to Mississippi’s hospitals and conclude that the financial incentives of Medicare were crucial to achieving hospital desegregation. \n  \n\n Medicare’s role in funding residency programs in teaching hospitals\n\nSee article by Suzanne Sataline and Shirley S. Wan\,  Wall Street Journal-Health\, April 12\, 2010  http://tinyurl.com/2w8kzke \n“There are about 110\,000 resident positions in the U.S.\, according to the AAMC. Teaching hospitals rely heavily on Medicare funding to pay for these slots. In 1997\, Congress imposed a cap on funding for medical residencies\, which hospitals say has increasingly hurt their ability to expand the number of positions. \nMedicare pays $9.1 billion a year to teaching hospitals\, which goes toward resident salaries and direct teaching costs\, as well as the higher operating costs associated with teaching hospitals\, which tend to see the sickest and most costly patients. \nDoctors’ groups and medical schools had hoped that the new health-care law\, passed in March\, would increase the number of funded residency slots\, but such a provision didn’t make it into the final bill.” \nShare and Enjoy !Shares
